Step 1: Level ground in area where liner will be installed.
Check specifications on your specific pond liner style for
exact installation area needed.
Step 2: Place liner template on leveled area.
Make sure the template is placed; on the side
labeled “This Side Up”.
Step 3: Outline template using a marking tool or
landscaping spray.
Step 4: Dig out liner shape, inside the outlined area.
DO NOT DIG OUTSIDE THE TEMPLATE.
Step 5: Periodically, check liner wall to make sure it is
level.
Step 6: Periodically, put template in excavated hole to
check shape.
Step 7: When the desired depth of excavated hole is
obtained, add 2 inch layer of sand, tamp down and level.
*Step 8: Place liner in the finished hole. Two people are
recommended for this step for easier installation.
*Step 9: Place stone, blocks or bricks on the collar
(one every few feet) to hold liner in place, while you
adjust the fit.
*Step 10: When you are satisfied with the fit, fill liner with
water. Stay a few inches below the top of the wall to prevent flooding.

* Light blue pond liner was used for demonstration purposes only. Black Fish Grade PVC vinyl is used for all pond liners.
Tips and Tricks |
Tip: Before you install the pond liner, make sure pond hole is free from all debris that can puncture pond liner such as rocks, stones, roots, etc. If not, remove all debris.

Tip: Soil should be graded at least 1" down, and away from the pond edge to prevent soil and water runoff contamination.
Trick: Create a Ledge to hide the pond liner. Remove soil from the edge of the excavated hole 3” to 4” deep and 7” to 9” out from the wall circumference of the excavated hole, forming a ledge. Keep the ledge even and level all around the circumference. Install the pond liner, making sure to fit it onto the ledge good and snug. Place the proper size stone on the ledge to hold the pond liner in place. The remaining pond liner should lie down flat on the ground, down and away from pond edge to allow for water run off. Rocks and stones should then be placed on top of the remaining pond liner to hide it. Fill pond with water to cover half of the ledge thus bringing the water level above exposed pond liner. |
Tip: If you create a ledge make sure the wall edge of the pond liner starts at the bottom of the ledge. The pond liner collar will be fitted into the ledge with the remainder pond liner laying flat on the ground down and away from the pond.
Trick: If large section of wall gets damaged or collapses during construction follow this method of repair. Make a mixture of 1 1/2 shovels of Portland cement to 15 shovels sifted non-organic soil. Build reinforcement against the pond wall and back fill it with the mixture. Add only 6 inches of the mixture at a time, tamping it down. Then, use a watering can to wet down the mixture. Repeat until desired height is reached. Wait 24 hours to remove the support. If satisfied with the result, put in liner and fill with water. |
Hint: If the dug-out area has some voids that are larger than the template, simply install the liner. Fill with water gradually back-filling the void or voids with a mixture made up of 1 1/2 shovels of Portland cement to 15 shovels of sifted non-organic soil. Add about 6 inches of the mixture at a time, using a watering can to wet down the mixture, repeat until desired height is reached. Hold back the filled wall area, putting tension on the wall by placing stone or stones on the large collar. In 24 hours, the mixture should be hard and you can finish your pond.
